A well-educated populace is the bedrock of a healthy democracy and a strong economy.
Learning how to accurately reason is not innate, it is a skill that must be taught. It is a skill that benefits not only the self, but also the nation. A well-educated populace is less likely to vote for demagogues appealing to the basest emotions and more like to want community and civic leaders that work to improve society. Educated people are less likely to continue generational strife, poverty and tribalism.
Anti-intellectualism is a poison dragging down people and ensuring hardship and suffering. Note that "you chose to take out a loan and now you have to pay it back" is a backhanded form of anti-intellectualism. No, people did not have a choice. The choice was to go along with a predatory system intended to leech off people or not get an education at all. That is a false choice. It is always better to be educated. It is always better to uplift yourself and your community.
Why should society fund an educated citizenry? Because we should all want to uplift each other and ensure a better tomorrow.
Opposing people being able to uplift themselves and their communities for the betterment of all is monstrous.
This subreddit does not allow people to make arguments that argue for society and everyone in it to be worse off, since there is no sane reason to do so.

I'm 42.
30 years ago I thought sexism and racism just had a 1-2 decades before the worst crowd was stuck into assisted living homes.
I had already given up on that when the incels rose. THEY have political power now. It's been completely safe to spew hatred on women. They have also gone from ridiculing trans people to spewing nazi solution stuff.
It can't be waved away as a few crazies, as laws are clearly starting to follow the hate.
Following the classic recipe: dehumanize and blame. Create policy and laws to limit the evil forces. Save the children mantras used as an excuse. Then finally remove from society. Start with next group. Probably political opponents. Maybe ramp up the violence on black people and use protests as an excuse to do more killings and create more restrictive laws.
It's been done again and again. It often succeeds if they only target their own people and does it quietly.
Watching US is like watching a frog boiling. The politicians on on board with this seems to believe that This Can't Happen In USA. USA is too great to be vulnerable to facism.

Yeah it isn't that they're going to suddenly stop existing, it's that they dwindle in numbers and don't appear at the same rate anymore since there's no real wealth building in those generations. GOP hardly beats out independent in the above 65 age groups now a days because they're so repugnant that even old people stopped liking them.
If the middle class existed today like it did for boomers, there'd absolutely still be a significant amount of millennial and zoomer GOP folks. But you can't want to protect your wealth if you have no fucking wealth to protect.

It's already begun.
The GOP was surviving on razor-thin margins to begin with. A lot of "solidly red" states are only that way due to Gerrymandering. Due to resistance in wearing masks or getting vaccinations among the right, the lion's share of covid deaths were among right-leaning voters, and in areas where they were barely getting by on extremely slim margins or already artificially controlled voting districts, this was a serious blow.
It's why the propaganda machine has ramped up so hard so fast among the Right. They know full well that their competitive hold is slipping and slipping fast. What we're seeing is the last desperate gambits played by desperate politicians. Authoritarianism is the only hope of survival for the Republican Party at this stage. If they fail to seize power now, then they will fade into obscurity; and they know it too.

Well, many millennials could never afford the traditional markers of adulthood like getting married, starting a family, or owning a home. Many that cannot cite crushing student loan debt as a cause. Then add in multiple recessions that have driven young people back to living at home in higher numbers than we’ve seen in generations in the US. The absolute disdain with which we are spoken of and belittled in media just helps to cement the reputation as a generation that never grew up.
The worst part of this is that with the interest not added and payments made over COVID, I actually had a shot at paying it off someday over the next few years. If they add back the interest, I might as well just accept I’ll be making IBR payments for the rest of my life since they don’t even cover the interest that accrues.

Here in Washington State elections are conducted by mail, you're automatically registered to vote when you get your driver's license, Abortion is protected, guns are more restricted, and we have no book bans of any kind. We're also making strides towards improving our urban public transport systems and clean energy generation.
We have our problems too, the cost of housing and drug abuse chief among them. But we're at least trying to make it better.

They know that young people are extremely unlikely to vote for them and instead of self-reflecting and trying to figure out what they need to change to attract younger voters they would rather discourage, dissuade, and otherwise try to stop young people from voting altogether.
Thankfully the voting age is set in a constitutional amendment so changing it would be nearly impossible.
The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.
If it wasn't for the 26th amendment I think that they would have already proposed legislation to raise the voting age.

This is the part that most people -- at least those who don't have student loans -- do not understand. It's not so much about the principal on the loan that's the problem. It's the usurious interest that they charge. Unless you have an incredible job that allows you to pay back your loan at a swift rate, you are always going to be paying 2-3 times (at least) what you borrowed. Given the cost of education these days, that can easily mean never, ever being able to get the loan paid off.

Im not much of a clubber/bar hopper anymore but 6 years ago when I was you would not imagine the amount of openly facist, racist, homophobic young people there were. The "gay side" of town has been dealing with constant attacks from other young people, not boomers or gen x. My friend worked security at a country bar and when I visited him it was absolutely filled with 20 somethings proudly speaking with slurs. I know bars and clubs are only small parts of the population but the evil of right wing extremism is well alive in the younger voters. And their hatred makes them more likely to vote. Also the added evil of opportunity. There will be assholes who realize they can be the first gen z or whatever the next gen is to say openly shitty conservative politics and make their fortune like walsh or shapiro. See, this is an interesting question to me. Currently, student loan payments and interest have been on hold for roughly 3 years now. That's long enough for a large majority of borrowers to adjust their monthly budgets to not factor them in anymore, either by necessity or carelessness, it doesn't really matter. What matters is, what does the government do if they try to restart loan payments and an enormous subset of borrowers simply refuse to pay?

And if they play hot potato with all of the loans now, then, in the event any forgiveness legislation passes, we will learn they created Credit Default Swaps for student loan debts, threw everything into big pools, and bought and sold the pools so many times, that nobody knows what’s what anymore. Since they’re too big to fail, the CEOs take golden parachutes and billion dollar bailouts are passed without a blink by “fiscally conservative republicans” almost exactly like in 2008.
I’m just guessing on CDS style bubble, or these loans are hot potatoes. Maybe just churning enough loans from Nelnet to Great Lakes to whatever then back to Nelnet causes a percentage of borrowers to miss or make late payments? Because like if borrowers had receipts from a private lender telling them in writing “we decided that you owe $10k less now”, then months later telling them “actually nvm we changed our minds, also btw you now owe interest on that $10k we said you didn’t have to pay back”, it’d seem like a pretty open and shut case in favor of the borrowers

Yeah I received this correspondence. It just said something like, "congratulations, your application for the one time student debt relief has been approved!" They never made it far enough to actually say, "hey your balance has been reduced!"
Either way, it still probably wouldn't hold up in court. This bill is 100% just a messaging bill to their base. They want their base to think they are holding those people to the flames and not letting them out of any "responsibility."
Shit it must be nice for Republicans that they can be elected so easily from people who have no idea about actual issues so then once elected they never have to do shit to make the country better.

The borrowers who relied on the government’s first decision (no tax on paused payments) and then trusting that information went and spent that money elsewhere would be unduly harmed by such a draconian retroactive law. Due process is a fundamental right. I think a big problem is that people get sucked into the conservative media bubble. If you commute to work listening to AM conservative talk radio then tune into Fox News in the evening, the way you perceive the world is carefully curated.
You're going to be fired up about migrants ruining the economy, transgender bathroom battles, and drag shows grooming children. And I'm sure they have some BS messaging about why student loan forgiveness is terrible, somehow.
Yeah, some of the voters of pieces of shit. But many, many others are well meaning but deeply, severely misinformed. Because there are no consequences for propaganda outlets pretending to be news.

I have several friends who are in this bubble. One just shuts down and refuses to engage me now. The other is a thoughtful academic who is brain washed. I've spent over a year working on him and have finally gotten through. He still watches Fox, but interestingly, he's starting to send me left-leaning memes and articles, and engaging in meaningful discussion. I almost gave up on him a few months ago, but I'm glad I didn't.
My point is that the only way to change their minds is by nonjudgementally engaging them continuously over a long period of time and exposing them to the other sides views. Attacking them back will only reinforce their opinion that leftists are evil and further entrench their mindset (like with my first friend who refuses to talk about politics anymore). The irony is that I'm an extremely moderate conservative, but the right-wing media has gotten so bad that even as a moderate conservative, I'm now considered a leftist. How far we've fallen as a country.

I think that's part of the problem too. Many conservatives vote for republicans cause that's what they did their whole life, not knowing how far right the republicans have drifted. I think messaging is an issue but it pales in comparison to the fact that too many eligible voters simply aren’t paying attention to what’s going on. If more people would vote at the state/local level things wouldn’t be so bad. It’s gotten like this because of people’s apathy and it seems it will be too late before people realize they have an opportunity to create change or stop some of this stuff from happening.

Maybe you’re right but if you’ll excuse the outdated psychology references, at its heart Conservatism is the ID and Progressivism is the Superego. It’s easy to get people to fear, to hate, to vote for short term financial gain like tax credits. It’s hard to get people to vote for short term pain for long term abstract improvements to society, to invest in other people’s children, to protect people that don’t look like them.
Fake news, outrage, and convenient misinformation spreads on the right in a way that it just doesn’t on the left.

If you were intelligent, which they aren't, you might reason that they want to keep a steady population of poor, desperate people to have babies which grow up to become poor cashiers, laborers, house cleaners, fast food workers, retail workers, and soldiers. A vast, steady supply of bodies to labor and suffer for the benefit of the upper classes. Don't let 'em stick their heads above water, don't give them a break, don't let them forget--or, god forbid, leave--their place. And make sure that their kids don't, either.

I finally paid off my student loans at 39, about a year before they announced the student loan forgiveness. People asked me if I felt cheated by not getting it and I was just happy for the people who did. I was paying almost $800 bucks a month and I know how hard it was for me. So knowing people would get some relief from that was all good for me.... you know.. because I actually care about other people and their problems. That's why I went into healthcare to help people.
