For non-degreed, no certification employment, probably some of the best wage and benefit jobs around in SC.

You know a company pays well when their benefits and salary are listed in job apps. Not listing it just means they want to get away with paying as little as possible.

My wife interviewed at JIMMYJOHNS a few years ago. On the door says “$20 per hour starting” she has the interview, they say “well no, it’s 10 but you get tips”

that happened to my sister, she interviewed at subway and was told she got the job. before her first shift (read: unpaid) she had to not only memorize every sandwich and exactly how many slices of each thing goes on each, she had to take some 'subway university' type courses (can't recall the specific name). this was for minimum wage and would have been her first job while in high school but she obviously said fuck no to that

I applied at a Henry's Market a while back ( it's now Sprouts) and was told I had to do a "test day" where I worked in all the departments so that the department heads ( meat, bakery, deli, produce etc) could give the interviewer feedback on whether they should hire me or not. I got the job but was never paid for that day of work. But I ended up in a class action suit against them and got a nice payout so I got the last laugh.

Your instincts are spot on. ANY work required by a business is required to be paid... including training.

Hooters made us do this, too. You had to take a test on the menu a week after the interview to get the job.
ETA: It was a 40 question quiz and you wouldn’t get the job if you got 2 or more wrong.

Zaxby's does the Zaxby's University thing too. Places that do that means that the 'university' is the only shred of training you'll receive. Oh and the university material is always undoubtedly wrong for the location you're working. If any job has a university, run.

that menu is pitifully easy to remember as 13 of the sandwiches have the same shit on them. But yeah, that job is still trash. I was a GM for years and I didn't realize how much it contributed to my depression and alcoholism.

I was working in a Timmies (we don't have Jommy Johns over here) but it also made me fucking depressed. Minimum wages fast food arr the worst of the worst jobs... you are treated like trash for trash wages. Never again. I never went back to fast food or even any restaurant.
I joined a grocery store recently for some workout and it's so much better. Wages aren't that good but I still get paid $16/hr. I do 8-12 hours on 3 days because I kind of enjoy the job while my big job is 4 days/week. I wouldn't go back to fast food even for $25/hr.

Worked at a company that advertised $20, and then when folks came in for the interview they were told $18 for the first 3 months, and then would bump up to $20. Out of the probably 50+ monthly applicants, I think we actually got about 2 people a month to actually make it through those first 90 days. Godawful turnover, it was a shitshow.

Maybe I'm the asshole or just a bit older and didn't grow up with it. But I absolutely do not tip fast food workers. Subway is #1 my most despised on this list that have started doing this
I'm not knocking fast food workers and granted they are the ones that deserve the tips.
But it's not my job to pay the wages of employees who work for franchises of million dollar companies. Especially when their shit food almost costs me as much to get a good meal somewhere else nowadays.
These companies either need to start paying their investors less dividends or they themselves need to just make less profit.
Had a discussion with my sister today when she asked me if I knew how much she made back in 2000 working at Disney world selling lemonade. I was generous and guessed $9. She laughed and said 5.25 and knew that stand had on avg $7000 an hour in sales.
I mean Disney is a billion dollar company, their prices are already outrageous and you can't be bothered to pay employees better. Even with their announcement of raising wages to $18 or $19 recently. They could do far better.

It seemed to sprout up during COVID which was fair, places couldn’t be opened to serve so I didn’t mind tipping basic take out and fast food places to help, but then when things opened back up they just continued to roll with it. Im definitely not tipping you just for doing your basic job of preparing my food or beverage.

Do you think it’s the individual making decisions to constantly continue this cycle, or more likely the fact that the system is built to crush each individual until all “good” choices are gone and the only possibilities are what that individual perceives as their options?

Hard to come home and cook a meal after working 60 hours a week, 40 full time and a 20 hour part time job to make ends meet. You're also hungry as fuck because your 30 minute break isn't long enough to do anything other than scarf down a quick snack, and if you do get something... it's going to be fast food too.
I love how people cast judgment on others "wondering why nothing changes", when literally no one does such a thing and we all completely understand that we are feeding the beast that will kill us.
I cook 2-4 times a week, but on the days that I don't... it is because I literally can't. I can barely make the drive home from my 2nd job and stay awake, and I didn't eat breakfast and I might have had a granola bar for lunch... if I even got to take a lunch. Because lunch breaks aren't required in my state, and they are provided "as business dictates" and business always dictates that I don't get a lunch break.
So, I hit the drive through.
I don't wonder why things aren't changing. I don't have the energy to invest in changing things, and I have bills to pay and can't just quit either of my jobs.

At least at dominos it's 15 when in the store and $7 on the road with tips it is like $29/hr though so not bad and if you don't get tipped for an hour the computer pays you minimum wage. .42 per mile mileage too, Jimmy Johns needs to up their game those rookie numbers!

Oh man, jimmy John’s was a lit job as a college kid. Got $1 less than min wage but those tips really did add up a lot. I just had to make deliveries all over town which wasn’t far. I was pulling in like 40-60$ in tips a shift plus min wage. Min wage went into my bank and my tips were used to take my ex out on dates. I understand as an adult that’s shitty pay, but back then it was pretty dope.

It’s great pay. For anything close paying positions without a degree you’ll need to live in an area with much higher cost of living like Charleston Greenville or Hilton Head. Rent in those areas is easily double Florence where the bucees is.
82 points
Yeah, Florence is right off I-95 in Northern SC; it’s widely known that the counties in SC on I-95 are very impoverished to the point where it’s colloquially called the Corridor of Shame (schools are extremely underfunded). $18 an hour in this part of the state is an actual living wage (Unlike Charleston which has become a hot area) though I’ve heard Buc-ees is a very hard place to work at. Also, SC ranks lowest in Union membership and anti-union sentiment is very popular so employers are not well regulated.

Yes Bucees is a zero-tolerance on any thing that you mess up on. I used to go to Bucees as a Vendor 2x a week and in passing Ive seen people on the spot get fired for not tucking in their shirt, looking at apple watch during down time, not talking back in a kiss ass way to the mgr, boom gone. That's good to know because they are opening a one just down the road from the warehouse where I work. Lots of people are talking about switching over for the pay but it's really hard to get fired at where I'm at. It's literally a zoo where I'm at. Start time is merely a suggestion. We wear whatever we want and instead of earbuds we have Bluetooth speaker blaring music.
Usually management talks people into quitting to instead of having "all that paperwork to fill out". When coworkers get frustrated and lets there work pile up and walk out mangers follow them out and "give them the rest of the day off" and others have to clean up after them.
So when these fools quit for better pay they will have an eye.opening experience at a real job.
Maybe they will come back with a better attitude.

Not OP, but worked with a dude with two FT gigs. That's the correct answer. He'd work swing (3-11) at job 1, then come in at midnight where I was and worked midnight to 9. He lived 45 minutes away. So like 4 hours of home life a day. On Saturdays or Sundays, he'd be off one of the jobs. So he'd catch up on sleep then.
I have no fucking clue how he didn't die.

She also gets pissed when she isn't offered overtime when it's available.

Also the no tattoos or piercings and phone has to be put away (as in not on your person and physically inaccessible) while on shift rules. Plus there's no break room so you have to stand in a corner somewhere for your 15 min break. You can't leave for your break and go to your car either.

The cellphone thing doesn't bother me to be honest. I remember working before cell phones and in emergency they called your work.
However I have issue with the fact you can't even go to your car on break. They also push the whole you should use your break to use the restroom and the rest of the time work. I hate that stuff just as much as I hate if you have time to lean you have time to clean.

I dunno, these days in America you never know when someone's going to spark off with a mass shooting or something. I've had pretty severe anxiety about not having my phone on me since I was in college, where I went to pick up some beer and found myself in the middle of an armed robbery at a gas station after deciding to leave my phone in the car.
It felt so helpless to not be able to dial 911 from the back of the store.

The owner also has a notorious feud with the state's General Land Office. Basically, he has a house on a beach (which is illegal because it fucks with beach conservation), agreed for a meeting with the department's legal team, made them wait two hours until 8, and told them "lolno, because I want my dad to have a house he can drink wine in while the sun rises along the beach". In respose, he got his water cut, so instead he just trucks in all the water he needs. He's a fucking asshole who thinks rules don't apply to him.

At first, I was going to comment that you probably earn every bit of that $150k as a GM and 50 hours per week is a wild underestimate. Then I got to thinking about your comment. If Buckee’s is indeed one of the better jobs in the area, you probably get to be a little more picky about who you hire and they probably work a little harder to keep the job. Not to mention the fact that there is indeed a path to higher paying positions.
It’s probably a pretty good deal.

You are absolutely right and that is a big point of r/antiwork. “People don’t want to work” is a lie.
People don’t want to work…for slave wages where your efforts are rewarded with more work until you die unable to ever retire. It’s the simplest easiest thing to understand. What’s weird is the people that are super profit/money motivated are the ones saying “no one wants to work”. They should understand the profit motive better than anyone!

Anti-Work isn't Anti-Effort. It's Pro-Human. Putting in reasonable effort where you get a reasonable (or better) return isn't something most of us here likely have a problem with. (Though there is an argument to be had about just how good of a return you can get in a system like ours, at all. Late Stage Capitalism is pretty poisonous, and Today's Good Deal has a non-zero chance of becoming Tomorrow's Failboat.)

I'm fine with a company saying "you are going to work your ass off - but when you go home, your bills will be paid and you fridge full of food". That's a trade we can discuss IF you're willing to pay a premium for that level of work.
What's dumb is all the "small business owners" complaining they can't pay minimum wage and get that same level of commitment. Yeah, no duh Karen, if a company is willing to pay 2x ~ 3x the wages THEN they can raise the work level of the position.

Right. I work at Walmart- they expect you to work your ass off, but at the end of the day they’re literally the best paying job around at $15.00/hr store minimum. This is why I started shopping at Walmart again. My other local grocery store option starts people at $8/hour and their prices are nearly 25% higher. Their employees always look like they’re wishing for death to come and save them from the rest of their shift. I’m not going to say that everyone at Walmart seems ecstatic about their job, but they don’t act like a bunch of condemned people watching the gallows being built.

It's a bit worse. I hated it. Literally not allowed to leave the building during a break. They told us that in orientation but I honestly didn't believe they'd enforce something so ludicrous. First day I tried to go to my car for a smoke during my "lunch break", a manager chased me down and escorted me back into the building. I was brought to the "break area" which was just a high-top table in the back that I was expected to stand at for the entirety of my break.
Also the wages listed here are for night shift only. Bucee's is 24 hours. If you want a regular shift, expect to make $3 or $4 less than what's listed.

SC here, and that starting wage is bonkers. My first few backbreaking retail jobs were all under $12 an hour, so I absolutely would have jumped at the chance to work at Bucees if I lived near it.

I live in Pittsburgh which is supposed to be "one of the most livable cities" - I was hired 6 months ago as a foodservice supervisor for $12/hr. 2 days ago got promoted to assistant manager. They gave me a $2 raise - so now I make $14/hr WHICH IS A WHOLE DOLLAR FIFTY LESS THAN THE MAN THAT HELD THE JOB BEFORE ME JUST A COUPLE DAYS AGO.

When saying that also state when that was. From context I'm assuming early mid 10s and there has been a massive inflation and col spike since. I started at 5.15hr but it's irrelevant now as that was early 00s. Not knocking you just asking for additional context.

Close, it was ~2017. But from what I've seen, retail wages haven't improved much (in my area) since then. So $18 an hour is still really good for an entry-level job here.

My wife's family is from Texas, so I've heard a decent amount about Buc-ee's and HEB. What I've heard is that HEB is the better of them, and when they were coming up actually had community support because they took care of the community that supported them. Either way they will work you like a Chick-fil-a would though. Mileage may vary because you are in a different area, but if they keep to the legend, you're dealing with ~straight shootin' Texan~ types in terms of business culture.

I knew someone who worked for them and loved it. Started at $18 and was promoted within a month or two. She’s absolutely not the type to kiss ass or be in the “in crowd” but is just a crazy hard worker. She was ultimately let go for using her phone when they had a zero-tolerance phone policy, but she had an extenuating circumstance and didn’t mention it to anyone beforehand, so I feel it was unfortunately her fault. She loved it until that point.

Dang zero phone policy is insane considering anything can happen to anyone at anytime given it be any movement to anyone

Nothing, they are serious about their rules but they can be because they pay well. Its simple rules like no phone usage and no tardies. You can be late or call in but it has to be at least a two hour notice. You get like 3 marks then your fired. But it is a very easy job, it requires no critical thinking or problem solving. It is the easiest job I’ve ever had. Edit : There to their :) ETA : Also, I have worked at two stores over 5 years and have gotten 1 mark. Even though I should have gotten 100 marks and should have been fired. Like, sometimes id be a few min to a few hours late and they would let it slide.

That’s what I figured.. I get this is the “anti work” subreddit but if you’re going to have a job, you agree to WORK at said job. No phone on the clock and showing up are pretty universal rules.

That night differential is the kicker.
I saw the sign posted on the pump at the store in Calhoun, GA. That’s pretty good money for people living in a small town in the middle of nowhere. If it was closer I would consider some of the jobs. But I bet you also work your ass off for that money. I was stressed out just trying to walk through the store to the bathroom. That place was crazy.
I think QT also pays fairly well, for a gas station.

I don't know how they compare to other/similar stores, but that's not awful pay for South Carolina. What I do know from being there as a customer is you will work your ass off every shift.

After a while, you get over the smell of puke, and, I would assume, other bodily waste. I had to clean up plenty of vomit during my 10 years at Target. Only gagged the first time.

Jesus what state you live in to require 8 years?
If not then how on earth does it take 8 years for a teaching position?
Edit: to make 40k a year. If pay range is above 70k that's understandable

I love buccee’s and will stop there any chance I get— that said…
This is typical for companies that are aggressively growing. When they find their natural ceiling and the gravy train stops, great wages are going to be the first thing that goes.
Look at how a Home Depot employee is compensated now versus 20 years ago, for another example.

Society peaked a long time ago for productivity and sales. Now its compensate for having hit the ceiling to keep infinite growth going.

No they do this because their turn over is massive and can’t support it unless they pay more.

I work with a guy who worked at Home Depot back around that time. He says that back then the hiring was more aimed towards people who actually had experience in the trades.
For example he was a very experienced carpenter for many years. When he was hired at Home Depot he was hired to work in the lumber department so he could assist customers accurately if they had questions or needed suggestions. Same went for plumbers, electricians, etc. now a days it’s more akin to any other retail job where many of the positions on the floor can be filled by people straight out of high school. So naturally the wages are going to be dropped lower as the baseline for experience required for the position dropped.
That being said another co workers ex wife works as an assistant manager and he says she makes around 60k salary with a either yearly or bi-yearly (can’t quite remember which one) bonus based on the stores sales performance that has been in the ballpark of 5k. This is also in a pretty low cost of living area where the city’s median income is around 20k. But it’s also a college town with a large university so I’ve always been curious how much that skews the stat.

Literally 20+ years ago I worked at Expo Design aka fancy Home Depot. I remember that the assistant managers (here in California) got 70-75k plus bonuses, and the store managers made like $100-120k. Which was really good money for then.
Best Buy also paid like $20 an hour for department supervisors and store managers got $140-150k around the same time.

It’s good pay but Bucees is known for working you hard, not giving breaks, and being really strict on its employees. If the pay is worth it and those things don’t bother you then it’s a great opportunity.
I generally avoid them because Beaver Aplin is an awful human being. But that is a personal take from someone in a position to let that affect my decisions.

The sad thing is that this seems like extraordinary wages - but this honestly is what people should be getting paid.
Bucees, while I may not like the owner's political stance, there is no denying he pays his employees very fair.

That’s the wages for Bucees across the country. What they don’t mention is you don’t get any breaks during your shift and can’t sit down either. I love Bucees but there aren’t enough wages in the world to make me work 6-10 hours with no breaks

I work with a guy that used to be a supervisor there he told me the pay is really good but they are really strict and will fire you in a heartbeat. He told me they fired a cashier because they saw her pick up her phone on the cameras.

NEVER WORK FOR BUC-CEES. They are great to visit and shop in but they are definition of slave labor. They make every attempt to get you to quit so they don’t have to pay for you if you get fired.
They take your bathroom breaks away from your actual break time and lunch time. They make you stay like 1-3 hours late because they refuse to hire more people - contrary to this sign.

It’s a gas station that is known for its insane gas pump volume, clean bathrooms and privacy, decent food, and other things. However imo, everything is over-priced.

Not sure where the Hooters aspect is coming in. It's basically just an enormous gas station/convenience store, mostly located in Texas but expanding into other states.
It's a cool place to stop on a road trip to load up on drinks/snacks and stop by the restrooms. It's pretty much always super busy, but I've never had any bad experiences there as a non-employee. Can't speak on what the experience as an employee is, though.

I mean you should've expected that. $50k a year on just 40 hours a week would be -over- $24/hr.
There's no way Chik Fil A would be paying a regular worker that

Probably still not enough money. I’ve never been in a Buc-ees that wasn’t an absolute zoo, like being in the mall the week before Christmas, before online shopping was a thing. I’m not sure why people love this place so much, but I have friends that require stopping there every time we travel. It’s too much. I just want to get my beef jerky and gtfo.

You only get 10 minutes of break time, oh and you also can’t be on your phone while inside, even if you’re off the clock. If they catch you talking smack about management or the company in general then you’ll get fired. The pay and benefits are great but the rules are ridiculously strict.

Wow how miserable, in Australia even a standard job will get you 4 weeks annual leave with a lot of public service jobs giving 6 weeks PTO, plus our healthcare is not tied to employment, you just get free hospital. Yanks are such simps when it comes to voting against their own material interests.

Yep this is what I’ve heard as well. When one opened up a couple towns over from me last year, a bunch of people jumped ship from their old jobs because it was amazing pay for our area. Most lasted maybe 3-4 months. The one near me must be a toxic place to work, and the impression I get is that’s the corporate culture. They know there’s not a lot of good work in the area so they offer everything someone would want and try to grind them into the ground.

We have ones opening up in our area, but they aren't open yet, so I can't ask anyone about working conditions. The pay they are offering is pretty high in our area and sounds pretty great. But...I saw a job listing for store manager, it was $150000 a year, 40-44 hrs per week with benefits, so like that's great and all. Then I saw one for assistant manager, $125000 a year, hours up to 49 per week or as needed.... Big red flag.

People sing their praises every time someone posts one of these signs on this sub, but it’s a notoriously terrible place to work. No real breaks, not allowed to sit down, ever, no real raises, micromanagement, high turnover. This is not a business we should be celebrating.

Everytime one of these pop up I'm obligated to tell you that the money is great for being a gas station attendant.
They are a ridiculous company to work for though and the turnover is fucking insane. You cannot be a minute late. You cannot use the bathroom on the clock. You're expected to be productive every minute of your shift. You cannot eat or drink on the property. Etc. They also are BUSY AF at all times. It's like Walmart on Black Friday constantly. You will never get promoted. So that general manager shit is never gonna happen.
They pay this much because the station would literally be empty if they didn't.
I don't and have never worked there. They put one up nearby my beach town and anyone that I know thats ever worked there made it 2 months tops.

Usually if somewhere pays inexplicably well that's the only benefit and everything else sucks or they'll pull a Target and schedule you for 20-29 hours over 7 days with weird shifts that make it hard to get a second job
