If you rent- it’s supposed to be at least 65 otherwise the “lord of land” must replace heaters and or windows/insulation and has to pay for or reimburse for a warm hotel till they do so. If you don’t rent there are grants available and HEAP will help too

I can't stand the heat coming on when I'm sleeping, it's noisy and gives me a headache. But my house is like 20% insulated (two external walls and not the floor), so it gets cold AF at night, just like I like it. I had a room mate move in who was pretty non confrontational and we never discussed the heat, I just turned it off at night. One day I got up in the morning and went to turn it on and she was standing in front of it staring at the temp reading, then slowly turned to me and screamed "FORTY SEVEN DEGREES IS TOO FUCKING COLD THIS IS NOT OK WE LIVE IN AMERICA I'M MOVING OUT IF WE DON'T HEAT THIS GODDAMN HOUSE AT NIGHT."
ETA: I'm not a monster, I just love to sleep in the cold and didn't realize she had a problem until she exploded. I bought her a $300 space heater for her room and set the furnace to turn on (to 74) at 5:30am every day so the house would be warm when she got up.
And yes, thank you for worrying about me, I have carbon monoxide detectors and they are functioning.

Those things only protect from superficial scratches. The films are uglier than the scratches. Leaving it on doesn't let you enjoy it scratch free and shiny at all.
And in the case of phones, it has to come off so you can put a proper screen protector on.

My in-laws take OBSESSIVE care of everything they own. My wife literally grew up shellshocked from the amount of times her parents would fly off the handle over the smallest spill or scratch or imperfection. Her dad owned a Porsche that he drove 20,000 miles in 15 years. Then bought another one and when he died 20 years later it had under 20,000 miles on it.
I studied industrial design in school and I came away from that discipline with a very clear notion that things WANT to get used. They don’t want to sit on a shelf and be coddled with diaper cloth, they want to fulfill their purpose in life, get ridden hard, and be left with a few scars to tell the story.
Things are made to be used.

Can confirm; sitting is bad for things. Won't buy a boat or car that's been sitting, no matter the condition because it will surely have bad fuel, bad lubricants, mold, rodent damage, dry rotted tires and belts+rusty brakes (on the trailer, in case of boat). Sitting=bad.

And BMWs. My old boss bought two BMW 540 sedans with a V8 and gave one to his brother. His brother only drove it about once every three months. His engine didn’t last even 2,500 miles before seizing. The dealer said there’s seals and other work that has to be done every two years or more often. My boss put almost 75k on his before he had the first problem. That was a crankshaft seal they could never get completely fixed so he had to deal with ruining his driveway and constantly putting more oil in it. BMW could never get it fixed.

It doesn't matter what the car is. Sitting or severely limited use will destroy critical components.
Cars need balance. It needs to be flogged hard frequently but not everywhere it goes. Some sitting is great for longevity but not all the time. "Flogging a day keeps the carbon away!"
Today's direct injection NEEDS full throttle pulls frequently. Even still, periodic decarb treatment is still a good idea.

The few pieces that we’ve inherited are most likely worth more than our house but have the love (scratches, knicks, dents,) that most don’t.

I once didn't realize I had the plastic on my microwave buttons for like 3 years (it was much thinner than in OP's pic, and didn't hang off any of the edges) The buttons were bubbling up and looked like shit and then I realized what I had done. Peeling it off to some brand new buttons underneath is a treasured memory I will take to my grave.

My mom thought leaving the film on kept stuff looking new. I pretty much existed to peel films off and upset her, and turn the thermostat up to 65 in an attempt to feel my nose again.
When she got older and had her own place it was always like 75 when I'd visit, so now I just think she was trying to stun me like an energetic pet bug. "This kid never stops, maybe if she's frozen I can have a minute of peace?"

That’s the perfect temp. 60-65 is usually what i sleep at. If it ever feels too cold I’ll take a hot shower and then everything is Gucci. If it’s hotter than 65 I have a hard time sleeping. I moved out of the hot valley which usually stays at 80 to Glendale where 70 is the norm during the day and 66 at night around this time.

I don’t live paycheck to paycheck but I get it. Heat is expensive. Recently oil was $5.85 per gallon which means a tank is about $1,000. For us, that lasts maybe 3 months between heat set at 62-63° and hot water. We aren’t broke by any means, but buying oil tanks more often than we have to hurts. That’s less money that can go towards other things.
ETA: this is Connecticut, USA. 700sq ft apartment. So it’s not even like we have a big space to heat!

Edit: 14-16 is usually where I keep it for winter, 16 for the colder spring and autumn days that require a heater. I only have a gas heater, no AC, so summer time it’s just windows open trying to get a cross breeze.
I don’t like having my place too hot in winter, or drastically different than outdoors the rest of the year. IDK I feel like it helps me adjust to the outdoor temp better, and my mom always used to keep the house at like 28-30 in the winter and 12-16 in summer and I hated it.
Edit 2: I’d say the typical summer high where I live is 28-32, and winter low -10ish, though most of the time it’s around a -6 to -2 during the day.
I’m the kinda person that wears short sleeves all but a couple months of the year. And prefer being a bit cold in general. I do have a heated table (kotatsu) which I like to use during the winter months to keep my bottom half warm. But I like ambient temps to be chilly.

Thyroid problems can affect this as well. Hypo = cold sensitivity and Hyper = heat sensitivity. I’m always cold and my brother is always on fire. I did go through premenopause/perimenopause when I was 25 (pcos/endo related), which was hell, and felt like I always had a fever (chills, on fire, repeat).

Our bill for the past two months was £1300. Our energy bills are more than double what they were last year. Since that bill we don’t have the heating on unless it’s really cold… we just wear a lot of layers.
We’re lucky in some ways because we are quite old and were both brought up in houses without central heating, so it’s just like going back to our childhoods. Not good or desirable but I’m just not paying energy companies any more than I absolutely have to on principle.

Welcome to the club. We’ve lived for over the past six years in a house with tall ceilings and open floor plan - very hard to heat, and VERY expensive. We keep it at around 62°, I think. I KEEP THINKING I’ll get used to it, but in fact, right now I am fully clad and have over my underwear, thermals, trousers and a t-shirt, a lovely (ugly) hooded down-to-the-ankles velour, a warming blanket on my knees, and a shawl over my shoulders. We can’t possibly spend enough to keep this house at a comfortable temperature, either winter or summer, and still eat well - and we do like to eat.

My apartment has high ceilings and an open floor plan as well so I feel your pain. And I don’t like using the central heat in general since it warms one part of the house more than it does the other part. So during the day I just don’t use the heat and bundle up, and in the evening I have a space heater that looks like a fireplace that I can sit in front of and feel cozy.

Totally agree. Here (the UK) energy is so incredibly expensive and we are not turning the heat on unless we absolutely have to. We got layers on and are plenty comfortable.

At 19 I got this trailer for my brother and I to move into, electric bill until winter was between 200-300. We have gaming pc's, we didn't mind. Fast forward to January when the December bill comes out, $550. And I was working a lot of overtime so I wasn't home. Come to find out our house heater was on 75. Yeah that went down to 60 real quick. That's where I like it during winter, makes it easier to adjust to outside temp. Adulting is hard.

Old apartment with steam radiators which get up to 230°F. I don't pay for heating but the radiator is so old it's rusted fully open. I just keep my windows open to moderate the temp. Even when -40°F outside, the window is still cracked open. Constant fresh circulating air and lower running temp for the PC.

Oh yeah. My first apartment had radiators. In the winter, the temp ranged anywhere from 50 degrees to "I'm standing on the sun with a blow torch up my ass"

Not fun when you just wake up. Go to bathroom and bump knee into the radiator while on the toilet. It certainly jolts you wide awake.
They come on randomly in the fall and spring. I have a recliner parallel and a few feet back from the living room radiator. Woken up from an unintended nap with feet on the radiator and my heels burning a few times.

Everyone has different comfort levels though. I like lower sixties and I live in the hi desert, we sometimes get snow. Then I raise it to 65.

I have the opposite problem. I used to keep the house at 69° during the day, 65° at night. Now we have an elderly relative living with us who is always cold, and he keeps the thermostat at the min of 78° at all times and still complains he is cold lol

I keep mine between 70 and 73 in the winter. That said, I’m an adult that pays for this, so it’s my prerogative to keep the heat up if I choose.
I’m personally ok with paying for comfort. When you’re paying the bills, you can make that choice too.

You can always warm up easier than you can cool down.
Put on a comfy sweatshirt, use a fluffy blanket, etc. I love a nice cold room when I can get all comfy and warm

Having previously worked with allergists, I can say that all of them have suggested lowering your homes’ temperature as it is more beneficial to your respiratory health. Also doesn’t hurt to save a buck or two.
