He was on Marc Maron's WTF podcast a couple weeks ago and was easily one of the most moving and human interviews in the 1000s he's ever done. Titus' spirituality unlocked a lot inside Marc that he didn't anticipate and it got real! Fascinating interview for any fans of Titus. Warning though bc he does discuss the sex abuse in his youth.

they seriously nailed the look on her. I'm a guy but I grew up seeing Barbies just like that all my life from cousins and female friends and kids of family friends etc. And there's always, always a bunch of them that are just naked and some with missing limbs.

Also even as a kid and to this day, I think Barbies need at LEAST knee and elbow articulation...but I guess they don't do it because it would require more small parts? But ugh...I remember thinking I'd definitely get some Barbies myself if they could bend like action figures because I needed female characters for my Action figure stories! and the only ones I had was April O'Neal, that one girl from VR Troopers, and what ever female power rangers I could find. But more than anything, I loved the idea of dressing them up. I had to pretend my green batman was a character I made up and that the Pink Ranger was his sister who had super speed. I wished I could have them wear regular clothes and then suit up in like ninja out fits when i was time to fight...

maybe I should get into toy making I just know there has to be kids out there who want that like I did. Boys, girls, and whoever else. I'm pretty sure they had giant GI joes you could dress up at some point. Like...imagine having a set of 1:10 scale action figures that all come with clothing and armor you can swap out. The idea being you make your characters. And then just have like hundreds of faces and hairs you can also get in packs. But then have deal for selling figures of copyright characters so you can have your favorite characters be part of it. like the xmen, power rangers, resident evil, etc

In the first trailer Ken suggests to Barbie that they should go back to her house together at night, she asks why, and he just says "Cause we're girlfrenboyfren", which is exactly what and how a little girl would say cause they don't know the reason behind why couples spend the night together, they just know that it's just something they do.

Severe-Emu-8703

1.4k points

Also when Barbie asks ”to do what?” Ken goes ”I actually have no idea” which is also accurate since a kid wouldn’t actually know what goes down when you stay the night, just that you’re supposed to do it when you’re a couple

What if the entirety of it is happening in a little girl’s mind and that’s why they’re all moving so stuff and doll like. She’s manipulating the dolls.

Also, the horror version:

What if Barbie Dolls are actual little mini people bred by Mattel who are transformed by some ray gun into little plastic dolls once they are fully matured. Like Logan’s Run.

Unfortunately, there is a major, critical error that renders the whole movie completely unwatchable.

The final action scenes take place at the 1978 Detroit Auto Show. But the soundtrack plays the song "Escape" by Rupert Holmes, which released in 1979. What are we supposed to believe, that this is some sort of magic auto show? Boy, I sure hope somebody got fired for that blunder. /s

This line confused me. Isn't Barbie a doctor too? Along with every other profession? Why would being a man matter?

itwasthegoatisay

104 points

I honestly think it's not because she's a woman but because she's not wearing a white coat. Barbie is what she is because of her outfits, so it would make sense he would associate outfits with professions.

MakinBaconPancakezz

Yeah lol I thought ken was always the supportive sweet himbo so seeing him say sexist stuff was kinda jarring

Though was the other commenter said, probably a culture shock from the real world

He said it while they are in the real world. I think it’s clear he picked up some sexism after leaving Barbie World.

Maninhartsford

I'm going with... He felt ignored in Barbie World so he falls into alpha male culture

laserdiscgirl

566 points

His interaction with the doctor was unexpected and felt completely out of character to me. But your pointing to the culture shock that Ken will have has me realizing he'll be experiencing a world where he's viewed as the one in charge as opposed to his home world where Barbie "rules". It's not just going to be Barbie who's having to come to terms with how the real world views her but Ken as well

Damn, my excitement just continues to increase for this

JoeyWilcoXXX

328 points

Yeah I didn’t really get him doing that. I’ve never really pictured the guy with a girlfriend with a million different jobs would be the one to say ‘my qualifications are ‘I am a man’’ and not really taking the doctor telling him ‘no you can’t’ seriously (possibly because she’s not a man?)

laserdiscgirl

373 points

Absolutely. My prediction is that the doctor scene is after Ken's been "educated" by irl men about how his status as a man is all that's needed to be in control of a situation OR maybe it's after he's realized how many jobs men have in the real world that aren't just "Barbie's boyfriend" and his reaction to the doctor saying he can't is less about newfound sexism and more just his basic logic of "I'm a man -> here, men have jobs like Barbie does -> Barbie job hops all the time and all it takes is a label/props/costume -> I, a man in this man-friendly world, will become a doctor with a clicky pen and sharp thing"

Edit because I forgot Ken has had jobs before too (just not as many as Barbie) so it could also just be as simple as he wants to be a doctor and this was his attempt at a job interview

Second edit: Robbie's Variety article has her and Gosling saying his Ken's job is "just beach" so...less likely he wants to be a doctor for old time's sake and more likely he just wants to be a doctor because now he can

ContextIsForTheWeak

70 points

Edit because I forgot Ken has had jobs before too (just not as many as Barbie)

Fair point, but I think it's worth noting that the ads from earlier this year were all like "this Barbie is a Doctor" "this Barbie is a diplomat" "He's Ken" "this Barbie is a popstar" "He's Ken too"

The dispute between Aqua, MCA, and Mattel was a big deal but the song is also THE pop culture music for Barbie. I'd guess the cover, and a lot of money, is the compromise.

Whoever at Mattel convinced their bosses to give the project to Greta Gerwig instead of Amy Schumer not only saved the company millions of dollars and tons of embarrassment but will end up making the company 100s of millions (of not billions in the long term) as an indirect (and some direct) result of this movie.

Margot Robbie picked up the rights to the Barbie movie after Amy Schumer's deal expired.

Robbie produced and chose Gerwig to direct.

Wait, wait...so this film, a movie about Barbie, is actually Margot Robbie's pet project?

That's actually cool as fuck.

Margot Robbie is also the main reason why the Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey movie got made. That woman is a force of nature.

Wait, so Mattel was giving away rights to anyone and Robbie just decided to pick up the rights? So it wasn't Mattel's idea to let someone smart and critically acclaimed use the rights to make the movie? They just got lucky?

CapSteveRogers

So it wasn't Mattel's idea to let someone smart and critically acclaimed use the rights to make the movie?

Yup, definitely wasn't Mattel's idea. I'm just grateful Warner Bros went with Margot Robbie and letting her take point on producing.

Edit: Okay, so Mattel was definitely involved and gave Robbie and her production company the movie rights.

That’s not how this works. Mattel isn’t the studio in this case. They license to Warner Brothers who makes the creative choices then Mattel signs off on them.

Yeah, the corporation agreeing to be the antagonist of their own movie is pretty creative.

Also, is Will Ferrell collecting toy movies to be the bad guy in?

My call is that it’s unironically a sequel to Lego Movie. The out-of-context shot of Will Ferrell in a business suit, in a complete diversion from the bright colors of Barbie’s world, spells it out for me.

The "BarbieLand" rainbow reminds me of the labels over the different Lego lands too. I don't actually expect them to be tied together, but I loved the Lego Movie/Lego Batman movie, so if there's more surprisingly good toy movies, I'm in

I think I am kinda getting the plot. It is about reclaiming the barbie aesthetic or how girls who genuinely love being girly get mocked.

You see people mocking Barbie for wearing bright colours and how when she introduces herself to bunch of girls, they say "We haven't played with Barbie since we were five." and they were all clad in black and seemed kinda dissatisfied.

This also lines with how some people perceive Margot in real life. Despite having the talent, many people don't take her seriously, because of her blonde-bombshell look.

Again this is just my theory.

RegretBaguette

175 points

I'm getting different vibes, but I like your interpretation. For me it reminds you of the moment you lose your girlhood and are forced into womanhood. Older men look at you differently and treat you like a sexual object. Other girls and older women start policing your appearance. The magic of childhood is being ripped away from you, and you have to learn how to define yourself by everyone else's expectations and interpretations of who you are as a woman (even though you're still a child).

Edit: another thought, if Will's character is the dad from the Lego Movie, then we could also view his actions as the fear your dad expresses when he realizes you're maturing. Often dads will try to suppress and police your newfound "womanhood," which can be scary and confusing when you don't even understand what's going on, you just know something has shifted about how others perceive you.

UglyMcFugly

I get the feeling the “weird things” that start happening in Barbie’s world are gonna be when her little girl hits that age… that time when kids suddenly think playing with toys is lame.

RegretBaguette

39 points

Absolutely. And if Barbie started losing her magic, for lack of a better term, then I'm guessing it's also that moment where you're still desperately trying to cling to the fun that was playing pretend but something is wrong. Then outside influence cements the idea of playing pretend is for babies and it's gone forever.

gringacolombiana

63 points

Greta Gerwig just mentioned being inspired by the parenting book Reviving Ophelia in a recent interview. And those are the exact themes the book deals with so I think your interpretation is right on.
